1. What is the name of the program?

  • Rockwood Electric Utility is proud to introduce its "SMART ENERGY PROGRAM."

2. What is the program? How does it work?

  • This program manages power to the high energy consuming equipment in your home - heating and air conditioning systems, electric water heaters and pool pumps.
  • The program allows you to exercise primary control over your energy consumption which will enable you to reduce the amount of energy that you use.

3. Who is eligible to participate?

  • The SMART ENERGY PROGRAM is available to QUALIFYING residential and small commercial customers of Rockwood Electric.

4. What are the benefits to me?

  • You can reduce your electric consumption without significant changes to your lifestyle or comfort levels. We anticipate that you may see up to 10% in energy savings by actively participating in the program.
  • As you reduce your energy use, you will be doing your part to help the environment and may also achieve a cost savings on your energy bill.
  • You will be able to create personal energy management programs and manage your energy usage from your secure, user-friendly online account.
  • You can create seasonal energy management programs as well as specialized programs for hilidays, vacations, or unique situations.

5. What are the benefits to Rockwood Electric Utility?

  • The program helps turn your conservation into generation. REU will be able to convert electric consumption in customers' homes and small businesses into clean sources of capacity and energy reserves.

6. Are you offering an incentive for my participation?

  • To offer this program FREE to you, we have partnered with Consert Inc., the intelligent load management technology company that will provide the hardware for installations.

7. Will I save money on my electric bill?

  • Many variables affect the amount of your electric bill, including weather, energy usage behaviors, electricity prices and climate conditions.
  • Similar programs reported an average energy savings around 10 percent. Though an exact dollar savings cannot be determined, we expect REU participants to have similar savings.

8. How quickly may I see savings?

  • Electric usage for the controlled equipment can be monitored daily from your personal online account, with usage comparisons available monthly.

9. Is there any cost to me?

  • There is no cost to you.

10. How will this affect my daily lifestyle? Will it require a significant dedication of my time?

  • The program is designed to complement your lifestyle and comfort settings.
  • Once your energy management profiles are complete, you decide how often to interact with the program. Your level of involvement is up to you. You may check the program daily or you can easily "set it and forget it."

11. What will be installed in my house or small business and what does it do?

  • We will install the following items in your house or small business:

    • Device controllers affixed to each of your major energy consuming devices, such as a heating and air conditioning system, electric water heater or pool pump. These devices monitor the energy used by your equipment and enable your online energy management program to cycle them on and off as you've specified.
    • Wireless, communicating programmable thermostats (that will replace your existing thermostats). Settings from your online energy management profile send commands to the thermostat. It also controls your heating and air conditioning system(s) in the same manner as any other thermostat.
    • A new integrated gateway device. The gateway device communicates both to the data center and the equipment in your home or small business. Some gateway devices are stand-alone while others may be integrated with an electric meter.

12. What do I have to do?

  • Your participation is simple:

    • Complete an on-line profile survey;
    • Sign a program "Participant Service Agreement";
    • Free installation of equipment at your home or small business;
    • Access a user-friendly online account to answer a series of questions that will establish your comfort settings for your heating and air conditioning system(s), electric water heater(s), and pool pump, if applicable. This should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
    • To maximize energy savings, you can create different online energy programs for weekdays, weekends, seasons of the year, holidays, vacations and special situations. The setup is very similar to the programs you can create on a programmable thermostat but much easier to do in your online account.
    • Answer a series of questions that will establish your comfort settings for your heating and air conditioning system(s) and electric water heater(s) (if applicable) from a user-friendly, online account. This should take between 10 to 15 minutes.

13. How will I know the system is controlling my home?

  • Once you complete your profile and energy management programs, you will be able to observe the following:
    • The target temperature will change and your heat or air conditioning will operate according to the schedule you created from your online account.
    • Your electric water heater will operate according to the schedule you created from your online account.

14. What happens when my electricity is being managed by Rockwood Electric Utility? How will it affect me?

  • Rockwood Electric Utility will periodically manage electricity usage to help curtail overall power demand and reduce overall wholesale power costs.
  • During these times, you may notice a slight change in your home's or small business' temperature. The change will remain within the comfort settings you specified on your online account.

15. If my energy usage is being managed, can I override it in an emergency?

  • Based on provisions within the participant agreement, you can override this feature from your online account or by simply adjusting your thermostat.

16. How easy is the online account to use?

  • The online account is very user-friendly.
  • You will receive a package of start-up instructions when we install the equipment.
  • You will be able to access additional instructions and help through the online help feature.
  • You will also be able to contact Consert's Customer Service for assistance at 1(855)851-5271, if needed.

17. When do you plan to install the equipment at my home?

  • We are beginning a pilot program for 100 customers and we plan to install the equipment by June 1, 2012. Other customers should be able to sign up for the program upon successful completion of the pilot program.

18. Do I have to be home or at my business when you install the equipment?

  • Yes, the property owner or an adult designated to make decisions must be present at the time of installation. We will coordinate the installation time with you.
  • The person should know where the equipment is located: AC compressor / furnace (if it is a separate unit), electric water heater and pool pump (if applicable).

19. How long will the installation take?

  • The installation time varies based upon the number of monitored equipment. The average installation requires between 2 and 2½ hours.

20. Who will install the equipment?

  • The equipment will be installed by Rockwood Electric Utility employees that have been trained by the factory to install the Consert equipment.

21. I already have a programmable thermostat, why can't I use it?

  • A programmable thermostat does assist with efficient usage of your heat and air conditioning, but it cannot communicate with the Consert system.
  • Only the thermostat and other equipment we install are able to communicate with the gateway and our data center. This will enable you to monitor and manage your electric consumption from your online account.

22. What if I do not have an electric water heater?

  • You may still be able to participate in the program. Contact Rockwood Electric for information.

23. What if I do not have a pool?

  • In general, this will not prevent you from participating in the program.

24. I already have a timer on my water heater.

  • The installed control device will enable monitoring and control of the electricity used by the water heater.
  • Even though the timer does not communicate with our system, it performs a similar function.
  • The timer must be removed and will not be reinstalled at the conclusion of the pilot.

25. Is my information secure?

  • Yes, the system we install uses the most secure wireless communication protocols available and encrypts all data (,ade unreadable by others).

26. How do you communicate with my home?

  • We will use secure, industry-standard wireless communication technology (called ZigBee™) to communicate between the gateway and the devices inside your home.

27. Will my information be shared with others?

  • No personal information will be shared.
  • Rockwood Electric Utility and Consert will collect data for internal business purposes only.

28. Can I terminate participation in the program?

  • Yes, you can terminate participation in the program without penalty after one (1) year as outlined in the Participant Service Agreement. Early termination may be subject to a penalty.

29. Who do I call if I need assistance?

  • For technical assistance, please call 865-354-0514
  • For general assistance, please call REU's Customer Service at 865-354-0514 or visit our website at rockwoodelectric.consert.com
